General Purpose

The Office of Fellowships and Funding in the Center for International and Professional Experience at Yale University is seeking a highly organized, student-focused individual with exceptional supervisory, communication, data management and stewardship skills to direct the Richard U. Light Fellowship Program (RUL). Reporting to the Director of Fellowship Programs, and as part of a dynamic and creative fellowships team, the RUL Program Director will provide the overall vision for and management of this highly successful program now in its third decade of operation. The RUL Program supports the study of East Asian languages in approved programs in China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea for approx. 135 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students annually.

Essential Duties

  1. Serve as Administrative Director of the RUL Fellowship Program.
  2. Advise on and manage competitions as assigned for additional internal and national fellowships.
  3. Serve as part of a CIPE team to advise students on fellowships.
  4. Direct information technology for the RUL Program including: Website creation and maintenance; multi-media projects, such as promotional videos for student information meetings and more general outreach, etc.
  5. Convene and set agendas for the RUL faculty-led Advisory Committees.
  6. Collaborate with Yale University faculty to engage them in the RUL Program (primarily through participation in the Selection and Advisory Committees) to foster a greater understanding and integration of the RUL Program across the campus.
  7. Steward the Light Fellowship budget of $2.4 million by managing the receipt, disbursement, and documentation of all funds with the further responsibility of developing long-range forecasts identifying areas for improvement.
  8. Produce a detailed, data-based annual report that documents the previous year’s activity and sets forth long-term goals for review by the RUL Board of Trustees and University Officers.
  9. Represent Yale University to the Light Fellowship Foundation; advise trustees regarding trends, forecast needs and opportunities, and recommend budgetary allocations. Attend the annual RUL Foundation board meeting.
  10. Collaborate with related departments and administrative offices (e.g. the Center for Language Study and the Council on East Asian Studies).
  11. Participate in fellowship/grant comprehensive database development.
  12. Represent Yale University and the RUL Program to, and participate in the relevant meetings of, internal and external organizations.
  13. Develop networking mechanisms for and between Light Fellows that will prove of benefit long after the fellowship term is completed.
  14. Oversee the approval process for overseas programs, including on-site visits and oversight of visits by faculty members or other administrators. Monitor quality and recommend improvements to approved and/or potential programs through direct collaboration with program directors abroad.
  15. Research, monitor, implement and contribute to best practices in the field of International Education.
  16. Supervise the RUL Assistant Director and Administrative Assistant.
  17. Other responsibilities as assigned.

Experience and Training

  1. Masters or Ph.D. with four years or more related experience in higher education administration, fellowship management or study/work abroad environment at the college level, or equivalent education and experience.
  2. Two years or more experience studying, working, or researching in East Asia.
  3. Extensive experience managing information technology issues.
  4. Preferred: Knowledge of Yale University a plus, but not required.

Skills and Abilities

  1. Previous supervisory experience and proven ability to manage teams of faculty and staff in order to build consensus and to implement projects on-time and within budget.
  2. Demonstrated ability to manage and report on complex budgets. Extensive familiarity with a range of database, spreadsheet, word processing and Web design software packages.
  3. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive material. Ability to put skills and abilities to effective and creative use within a high demand, high profile working environment.
  4. Excellent communication skills and organizational ability, particularly editorial and writing skills.
  5. Knowledge of one or more of the following: Chinese, Japanese and/or Korean (both language and culture) and ability to travel to East Asia and domestic meetings three or four times a year.
