Getting started

Whether you are a US citizen or an international student, there are many fellowship options for postgraduate study in the UK and Ireland. Some require you to first apply through Yale and receive institutional nomination while you may apply directly to others without going through Yale. To get started, review application advice and schedule an advising session.

What exactly is the campus endorsement or nomination process?

The campus endorsement or nomination process is an internal Yale competition to determine which candidates move forward to the national competition. The processes for the fellowships below are coordinated by Fellowship Programs. See the Student Grants Database (SGD) for deadlines, instructions, and links to official websites. Citizenship requirements and other eligibility criteria vary by fellowship.

Note: The Marshall, Mitchell, and Rhodes nomination process uses a common application with deadlines in late July and early August.

Churchill Scholarship
Supports one year of graduate study (including one-year research degrees) in science, mathematics, or engineering at Cambridge. Eligible: US citizen graduating seniors and recent alumni in STEM fields. Campus application deadline in mid-October. Read about recent Churchill Scholars, including two Kanders Churchill Scholars.

Fulbright Grants
The UK Fulbright funds degree study. This application is a bit different from other Fulbright grants. Eligible: US citizen graduating seniors and alumni.

  • Graduating seniors are strongly advised, but not required, to participate in the campus process: campus deadlines begin in August. Also consult campus application timeline and checklist. For the Fulbright, the campus process is evaluative rather than selective; Yale will submit an evaluation but almost all students move forward to national competition.
  • Alumni apply directly or through their current graduate/professional school, but Fellowship Programs can provide advising.

Henry Fellowship
Supports one year of graduate study at Oxford or Cambridge. Eligible: graduating seniors, US citizenship not required. Campus application deadline in early February. There is a common application for the Henry, King's-Yale, and Mellon Fellowships.

Keasbey Scholarship

Campus application deadlines for seniors (who must seek institutional nomination) in late July and early August; alumni apply directly for the Mitchell. Read about a recent Mitchell Scholar

Paul Mellon Fellowship
Supports up to three years of study at Cambridge. Eligible: graduating seniors, US citizenship not required. Campus deadline in early February. Berkeley College, not Fellowship Programs, coordinates the selection process, but seniors can seek advice from Fellowship staff. There is a common application for the Henry, King's-Yale, and Mellon Fellowships.

Where Else to Look

Especially if you've found a degree course which sounds like a great fit, don't only consider at the fellowships listed above. Look locally and research funding information for prospective students by universities such as Edinburgh and LSE, among others.
